A LAND OF SUPERB NUANCES
Gap once was a roman camp between Arles and Montgenèvre, today it is the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes.
With 38,000 inhabitants it is a small town.
You can visit the cathedral, the Place Jean Marcellin, the pedestrian area and the departmental museum.
Enjoy all the pleasure of nature at lake Charance, or visit the rose garden and the orchards of the
Conservatoire Botanique National Alpin. On the plateau of the Bayard pass you can go cross-country
skiing or play golf, as well as going for a walk with the whole family. Gap is also the starting point for a large number of hikes :
to Ceüse mountain and its rock climbing site, the Pic de Bure, and the Chapeau de Napoléon.
Tallard is the setting for historical reconstructions, and well-known for its aerodrome and gliding
and parachuting activities.
A bit further down the Avance and the Durance valleys there are wine and fruit routes from Valserres
to Espinasses.
You can also visit the Notre-Dame-du-Laus sanctuary where little Benoîte had a Marian apparition.
Pass the Serre-Ponçon Dam and you will return to Gap via Chorges, hometown of an ancient tribe of Caturiges.
